Shane Meadows has said filming the This Is England follow-up was so much fun that it was like a summer camp.

Director Shane was reunited with the hit film's original cast members for the four-part TV series This Is England '86 - including Thomas Turgoose, Joe Gilgun and Vicky McClure - and he said they could have more fun now they are a bit older.

"It was like a summer camp," he said. "A lot of them were 15 when we made the film, so I've got a lot of responsibilities as a director. You don't hang around with them but we became friends as the years rolled by. I'd always been friends with Vicky but a lot of them were too young to drink - but on this one because everyone's 18, 19, 20, 25 and our base became a pub called The Stag."

He went on: "It ended up being as close as you kind of get to going back to school and having a summer holiday or something. It was that much fun, even though there were hard scenes and hard sequences to shoot.

"It's basically like being told you can go and live with your best friends, you can take six weeks, eight weeks off work, and just go and have fun for eight weeks. It was such a joy."

:: This Is England '86 will be on Channel 4/HD on Tuesday, September 7, at 10pm.
