James McAvoy has joked about how difficult it was playing a telepathic mutant.

The Scottish actor portrays the young X-Men leader Professor Charles Xavier in Matthew Vaughn's X-Men: First Class, and quipped that he felt the need to make his power a physical one.

"I saw what everybody else was doing and they all got to do really cool ninja stuff, but I don't really get to do anything. So, I thought I had to physicalise my power and came up with the master-stroke of touching my temple!" he joked.

"I went through three months of intensive training. I even hooked up with a couple of temple ninjas who were based out of Dagenham."

For James, a big fan of the Marvel comic series, the opportunity to put his stamp on the X-Men legacy was a childhood dream come true.

"I was first aware of the cartoon while I was growing up. When I was about 12-years-old, they started showing it on Alive And Kicking. I was a big fan of that and the first two films as well," he recalled.

:: X-Men: First Class is in cinemas now.
