Matt Damon is in talks to play Robert F Kennedy in a movie directed by Gary Ross, it has been revealed.

Eastern Promises' Steven Knight is writing the screenplay, adapted from Evan Thomas' Kennedy biography His Life, about the political leader, who worked hard to become more than just JFK's younger brother, forging his own political career, only to be assasinated himself in 1968.

Deadline Hollywood reports Damon will wait to see the script before committing to the project, with production company New Regency.

Robert Kennedy's assassination at the Ambassador Hotel is an inspiration for the big screen. It was the backdrop for Emilio Estevez's 2006 ensemble-cast movie Bobby, and Chris Columbus is developing The Last Campaign, based on RFK's presidential run with his partners at 1492.

Ross has held a long fascination with Kennedy and once optioned Thomas' biography himself.

The movie will be another real-life character challenge for Matt, who plays South African rugby captain Francois Pienaar in Invictus and starred as Mark Whitacre in The Informant!
