The film, which reunites Washington with his Training Day co-star Ethan Hawke and director Antoine Fuqua, also features Magic Mike star Matt Bomer and Jarhead actor Peter Sarsgaard.

It focuses on seven gunmen in the Old West uniting to help protect a poor village against savage thieves. It will be released in the UK on September 23 and is a re-imagining of the 1960 classic starring Steve McQueen.

Designer Tom Ford's new film Nocturnal Animals, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Amy Adams, will screen in competition at the festival, alongside Denis Villeneuve's sci-fi Arrivals, which also stars Adams, and On The Milky Road starring Spectre actress Monica Bellucci.

The Light Between Oceans, the film that brought Irish actor Michael Fassbender together with Oscar winner Alicia Vikander, will also play at the festival, alongside Jackie Onassis biopic Jackie, starring Natalie Portman.

Damien Chazelle's follow up to Whiplash, La La Land, will open the festival, with stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone expected to bring some Hollywood glamour to the first night.

Also on the line-up is The Bad Batch, starring Jim Carrey, Keanu Reeves and Game Of Thrones actor Jason Momoa. Fellow Game Of Thrones star Kit Harington is also expected at the Venice Lido for the premiere of his film Brimstone, alongside Dakota Fanning and Guy Pearce.

The Magnificent Seven will premiere out of the competition, as will Mel Gibson's Second World War drama Hacksaw Ridge and The Bleeder, starring Naomi Watts and her husband Liev Schrieber, alongside Mad Men star Elisabeth Moss.

The Venice Film Festival runs from August 31 to September 10.
