Andie MacDowell believes her daughter has made "good choices" as she follows in her footsteps into showbusiness.
The Four Weddings and A Funeral star appeared alongside 23-year-old daughter Rainey Qualley in Portugal as she prepared to christen a new luxury ship, the Queen Isabel.
Rainey, who starred in her first feature film Mighty Fine last year, said her mother "drilled" advice into her as a youngster which has helped as she enters the spotlight.
"Something that she's drilled into my head, which used to get on my nerves when I was younger, is that 'preparation plus opportunity equals luck'", said Rainey.
"I guess that something that can apply to whatever interest or career you're going into."
Andie, 54, said her daughter's "true passion" for both acting and singing would bode well for the aspiring performer.
"Everybody's journey is completely different," Andie said. "Rainey loves what she does, that's the most important part. She loves acting and she loves singing. If it's a true passion and it's something that brings you complete satisfaction and joy then it's definitely worth going for it.
"Nothing in life is easy, everything is difficult. She loves what she does. She's making good choices, works really hard and is working with talented people."
Andie is in Portugal along with fellow Hollywood star Sharon Stone to christen two new luxury cruise ships from Portuguese firm DouroAzul.
The Hollywood stars spent yesterday touring a vineyard in the Douro region near Porto before they become godmothers to the ships, Amavida and Queen Isabel, in a ceremony tonight.
