The former Desperate Housewives star will judge the documentary and student short film competitions alongside Oscar-nominated actress Abigail Breslin, actor-writer Danny Strong and celebrity chef Bobby Flay.

Other celebrity jurors for this year's festival include Whoopi Goldberg, Evan Rachel Wood, Josh Radnor, Bryce Dallas-Howard, Taraji P Henson, Mira Sorvino and filmmakers Paul Haggis and Tony Gilroy.

Jane Rosenthal, who co-founded the festival with Hollywood star Robert De Niro and Craig Hatkoff, said: "We are delighted to welcome such an illustrious group of individuals to the Tribeca jury. We look forward to their expert perspective on the films and talent in our programme, and the dialogue that emerges from the process."

The winners for the seven categories, which include competitions for world narrative and documentary, best new director and short film amongst others, will be announced at the awards ceremony on April 25.

Six films from the festival, such as musical biopic Greetings From Tim Buckley starring Gossip Girl's Penn Badgley, drama Monogamy and thriller Rubberneck, will be available to UK viewers to watch on demand via pay-per-view.

Robert De Niro said: "American audiences have really enjoyed being able to participate in the festival experience, not just in New York but from all over the country. We are looking forward to bringing these films to homes across the UK."

The Tribeca Film Festival, now in its 12th year, runs from April 17 to 28.
