Lilly: Pregnancy made stunts tough

Evangeline Lilly plays elf Tauriel in The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug

Evangeline Lilly has revealed that doing the physical stunts in The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug were a "slog", because she had become a mother.

The Lost star, who plays elf Tauriel in Peter Jackson's sequel, admitted that giving birth to her son Kahekili left her feeling quite drained when she started filming the movie.

"It should have been a complete and utter joy because I love doing physical work. But it wasn't - it was such a slog for me because the difference in my body from pre-pregnancy to post-baby was like night and day," she said.

"I didn't have the strength, I didn't have the flexibility, I didn't have the stamina, I didn't have the mobility. I felt like I was handicapped from giving birth to my child. So it was really challenging."

Evangeline revealed that basking in the afterglow of being a mum didn't give her the motivation to be "gritty" as Tauriel should be.

" I also didn't have the grit. My brain was in nursing mode and mummy mode. I was all soft and gooey and happy and Peter would be like, 'More grit!' I would think, I don't want to be gritty and angry, I want to be soft and mushy," the 34-year-old added.

Evangeline revealed she had always dreamt of starring in a Hobbit film.

"It was literally a dream come true. It was amazing enough to pull me out of retirement and pull me out of bed when I was three months out of giving birth so it was a big deal for me," she said.

Martin Freeman, Benedict Cumberbatch, Orlando Bloom, Sir Ian McKellen and Luke Evans also star in The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug, which is in cinemas now.
