Liam Hemsworth looks set to star in Arabian Nights.

The Australian actor, who appears opposite girlfriend Miley Cyrus in Disney's upcoming drama The Last Song, is in negotiations to play the lead in Inferno Entertainment's 3D adventure directed by Chuck Russell, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The period epic, written by Russell and Barry P Ambrose, follows a young commander - the part Hemsworth is set to play - who, after his king is murdered in a coup, joins forces with Sinbad and Aladdin to rescue Queen Scheherazade.

Based on the Middle Eastern folk stories One Thousand And One Nights, Arabian Nights has had many incarnations in film and television.

The project is aiming to start filming at the end of the summer.

Liam, former star of Australian soap Neighbours, is currently relatively unknown, but this role would help him catch up with older brother Chris Hemsworth, who appeared in the Star Trek movie and stars in Marvel's superhero action fantasy Thor, out next year.
