Jennifer Lawrence is set to team up with director Gary Ross for East Of Eden.

The Oscar-winning actress will star in the new adaptation of John Steinbeck's book of the same name, which the Hunger Games filmmaker will direct, reported Deadline.

The 23-year-old is tipped to play Cathy Ames, "a cold and cruel mother and farmer's estranged wife".

Loosely inspired by the Biblical tale of Cain and Abel, the novel - which is set in California's Salinas Valley before World War I - tells the story of two families, the Trasks and the Hamiltons, over the course of two generations, and the rivalry between their sons. There is speculation that the book could be split over two films.

Universal Pictures, who first acquired the rights in 2004, and Imagine Entertainment's Brian Grazer have closed a deal with the Steinbeck estate.

East Of Eden was previously adapted into a film in 1955, starring James Dean and Richard Davalos as the Trask brothers, and directed by Elia Kazan.

Jennifer and Gary could also join forces for the big-screen adaptation of Hannah Kent's novel, Burial Rites, where she would portray a young woman accused of murder in Iceland in 1829.

The actress will next be seen in the second Hunger Games film, Catching Fire, which will be released in November.

Jennifer, who won the best actress Oscar for her performance in Silver Linings Playbook, will be reunited with her Silver Linings Playbook co-star Bradley Cooper for two films - Serena and David O Russell's American Hustle - and will reprise her role as mutant Mystique in the X-Men sequel, Days Of Future Past.

Gary's next project is taking the reins on the big-screen adaptation of Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson's children's book Peter And The Starcatchers for Disney, and The Black Lagoon.
