"I try to be cognisant of what happens on a daily basis," the actor and filmmaker revealed at the AFI Fest in Hollywood.

"On my sets, if I see someone's head hanging, you spend three months on a film and for some people a lot of life events are happening around them sometimes," Kevin explained.

He went on: "I might call them over at lunch and say 'you alright?', because I have my bad days too."

The 55-year-old hit the red carpet to show audiences his new movie Company Men. The film, which also stars Ben Affleck, follows the lives of three men trying to survive a round of corporate downsizing.

"I was touched by some of the moments and I empathised as I was reading," he insisted.

The actor said today's global credit crisis has led many people in the States to question the American dream.

"Well we used to think if we worked really hard we'd be able to afford our house and that our wife wouldn't have to work, that we would have things, and somehow it hasn't really worked out that way for a lot of people.

"People are having to do with less, it's not just us here in America it's everywhere, but maybe the biggest lesson is in America," he said.
