Julianne Moore nearly didn't sign up to her latest film - because of its star-studded cast.
The Oscar-nominated actress appears in the new comedy Crazy Stupid Love with Steve Carrell, Ryan Gosling and Kevin Bacon.
But the top-notch names put The Kids Are All Right star off at first, because she "thought it was going to be another one of those rubbish romantic comedies with a lot of stars in it", she admitted.
"Putting lots of big names in a movie, who are there just to look beautiful, is never going to work," she said.
"All the great romantic comedies, like Annie Hall, When Harry Met Sally and Tootsie, have strong stories, just like this film.
"It touches on the whole spectrum of the romantic experience, from infatuation to marriage and divorce."
Julianne, known for her serious roles in the likes of Chloe and A Single Man, plays cheating wife Emily in the film, which also stars Emma Stone and Marisa Tomei.
She credits co-star Steve for getting her through the challenge of turning her hand to comedy. "It's like something I've never seen before. He not only made me laugh, but was a really thrilling acting partner, because he truly knows how to mine even the most nuanced bits of absurdity out of every moment," she said.
She added of the film: "Families are complicated. I liked that this wasn't a traditional romantic comedy."
:: Crazy Stupid Love is released in cinemas on Friday, September 23.
