Jude Law has confessed his latest film role in Dom Hemingway scared him, but he relished the challenge.
The actor gained 30lbs to play the drama's eponymous anti-hero - a seedy, heavy drinking safe cracker - and he admits he had to go to a dark place to play him.
Jude said: "I quite like the challenge of taking on stuff that scares you. It usually means it's the right job to take. If anything just to see if you can do it. And to overcome fear I find working doubly hard at least gives you the excuse to say, 'Well I tried'.
"'Do something that scares you every day'. I think I'm an advocate of that, we live in a world where we tend to get herded into doing everything that's easy as supposed to taking on or facing stuff that may be hard for us, but you get more rewards in the latter."
The 40-year-old actor revealed getting the character's physical appearance right was just a case of "letting it all go south".
He said: "I choose to play around with my physical appearance because it's helpful to assume the physical relationship the character would have with their body. So with Dom I just let go for three months and ate what I wanted and drank what I wanted."
But he admitted getting back into shape afterwards was, "harder work".
