John Lithgow has signed up for the Planet Of The Apes prequel opposite James Franco.
The 3rd Rock From The Sun star will play the Alzheimer's-stricken father of a young scientist (James) in Rise Of The Apes, The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision blog reports.
Slumdog Millionaire star Freida Pinto is the movie's female lead, a primatologist.
Directed by Rupert Wyatt, the next instalment in the Apes franchise will be completely CGI. Peter Jackson's visual effects company will turn the actors into primates without the need for heavy make-up.
Set in the present day, it will follow the young scientist who has been working on a cure for Alzheimer's that is being tested on apes.
The test subject evolves rapidly, and the scientist takes him home to live with him and protects him from cruel doctors.
Don Cheadle is also apparently in talks for a role.
Due to begin shooting next month in British Columbia, the film is pegged for release in summer 2011.
