Jane Austen comedy and Miami drama win critics' approval ahead of awards

A Jane Austen comedy and a gritty drama charting a young man coming of age in a rough neighbourhood are the two very different frontrunners at the London Critics' Circle Film Awards.

Bonnets-based romcom Love & Friendship, starring Kate Beckinsale, Chloe Sevigny, Stephen Fry and Tom Bennett, is adapted from the Austen novella Lady Susan and is tied for most nominations with Moonlight, set on the mean streets of Miami, with seven nods apiece.

They are both up for film of the year as well as multiple acting honours at the ceremony which will take place on January 22 at The May Fair Hotel in London.

Whit Stillman's Love & Friendship and Barry Jenkins' Moonlight are closely followed by German comedy Toni Erdmann with six nominations, and La La Land, Manchester By The Sea and American Honey with five citations each.

British actors Naomie Harris, Andrew Garfield, Beckinsale and Bennett each received nominations both for specific performances and for their body of work in 2016.

Nominations for the 37th annual ceremony were announced at The May Fair on Tuesday morning and the winners will be voted on by 140 members of The Critics' Circle Film Section.

Chair of the Critics' Circle Film Awards Rich Cline said: "Our critics nominated more than 160 titles for film of the year alone, representing the range of wide opinions and the sheer number of movies critics watch each year.

"There was love for everything from Aferim to Zootropolis, including Captains America and Fantastic, plus acclaimed women from Jackie, Julieta, Moana, Christine, Krisha and Victoria to Miss Sloane and Florence Foster Jenkins.

"Making it onto that final list of nominees is never easy."

Last year's big winner was George Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road, which picked up both the film and director of the year awards.
