The Australian star, who has portrayed the clawed mutant seven times, most recently in James Mangold's The Wolverine and Bryan Singer's upcoming X-Men sequel Days Of Future Past, revealed he would be up for returning to the part again but only if there is "compelling reason" for another movie.

"I don't want to dive into another one until we have a compelling reason to do another one," he told Entertainment Weekly.

Hugh has already been discussing some ideas with James.

"I was on the phone with Jim Mangold last night. There are some really cool ideas that I'm dying to tell you, but that would be giving away a secret that is not even formed yet," he explained.

"I love the character, he's kind of like a best friend to me, and I don't ever want to take [him] or the fans for granted. I think we've got a great opportunity to make something really cool, but it has to be great. That's what we're all working toward."

The 45-year-old, who is on a movie by movie deal for his role, admitted he prefers playing Wolverine now he is older.

"I kind of am enjoying him more than ever. Being older helps playing Wolverine. He's 200 or 300 years old - no one really knows - and he's sort of world-weary. The actual working out gets harder and harder, I'll admit," he said.

Hugh, who will start shooting Neill Blomkamp's Chappie in early 2014, also joked that he has no interest in reprising the role for the stage.

"Not with me," he said, adding: "But, hey, they did Rocky. Who would have thought?"
