She clutched the Oscar while appearing on Ellen DeGeneres' chat show last night and spoke candidly about her win.

Ellen, who presented the Oscars on Sunday, informed audiences that Cate has apparently gone to bed with her prize the previous evening.

"It's the closest my husband and I have ever come to a threesome," Cate, who is married to playwright Andrew Upton, laughed to the crowd.

A new trend for stars allowing their accolade to be passed around emerged this year, following Jared Leto's insistence that journalists in Sunday evening's press room "fondle" his Oscar and take selfies with it.

Cate also handed out her award for Ellen's audience to touch, which they did with care.

A visibly exhausted Cate made her appearance on Ellen as another year of awards season came to a close.

As she stepped out on to stage, Ellen asked her if she'd like anything.

"Do you have a blanket or a coffee or something?" Cate smiled, before a member of crew did in fact produce a blanked for the tired star.

"I left before you did [last night]. I don't know how you are doing this!" she then exclaimed to Ellen.

This was Cate's second Oscar win. The 44-year-old Australian took home gold in 2005 for her role in The Aviator, alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and Alec Baldwin.

"I have no memory. No memory at all," she said of her win nine years earlier.

The pair then went on to reflect on the fun they'd had the night before, with Cate revealing she missed out on Ellen's pizza order.

Stars such as Brad Pitt, Kevin Spacey and Meryl Streep tucked into the cheesy treat, which was delivered directly to the audience at the Dolby Theatre in LA during the night.

"I went to the bar to try and get something to eat and then they wouldn't let me back in!" Cate laughed.

"But all those actresses were hoovering it up so I wouldn't have got a piece anyway."

The 86th Academy Awards was the most-watched Oscars in a decade.
