THE Irish animated film The Missing Scarf has made it down to the final 10 in the running for the Academy Award for Best Animation.

The list was whittled down from 56 and the endearing short is now in with a shot of winning a shiny gold statuette at the Oscars next March.

Narrated by internet sensation and Star Trek actor George Takei, The Missing Scarf is a black comedy exploring many of life's common fears: fear of the unknown, fear of failure, fear of rejection and finally the fear of death. But it's all delivered in the misleading tone of a child's storybook reading.

And viewers meet lots of super cute animals along the way. There is an ear muff wearing beaver and several knowing owls. The film was written and directed by Eoin Duffy -- an Irish animator currently living in Vancouver.

"US reactions have been very strong to the film. Audiences have responded well to the ideas in the script," Duffy said.

But he couldn't hide his shock when he heard it had got the nod of approval from the academy. "WHAT!!!??!!!?! My film The Missing Scarf has been shortlisted for the Oscars," he wrote on Twitter.
