Hugh Grant is taking to the high seas to voice the role of a pirate in a new 3D animated film.

The Aardman Animations film - The Pirates! In An Adventure With Scientists - stars the Bridget Jones actor as the bearded Pirate Captain.

His rag-tag crew will be played by Martin Freeman, Brendan Gleeson, Russell Tovey and Ashley Jenson.

In the movie, Captain Pirate dreams of beating his rivals Black Bellamy (Jeremy Piven) and Cutlass Liz (Salma Hayek) to the Pirate of the Year award.

On the way, the captain and his crew do battle with pirate-hating Queen Victoria (Imelda Staunton) and team up with a young Charles Darwin (David Tennant).

Peter Lord, who directs the stop-motion movie, said: "I'm so grateful to the entire cast for their talent and energy. The characters that they've created fill the screen with life and fun."

He said Hugh's performance is "stand-out", adding: "He combines an effortless on-screen warmth with brilliant comic timing."
