Dennis Hopper has been praised for working long days on his last movie before he was diagnosed with cancer.
The 73-year-old acting legend was diagnosed with prostate cancer last October, but in early 2009 he filmed The Last Film Festival playing a Robert Evans-like producer.
Director Linda Yellin told The New York Post: "He was in great health and had enormous charisma when we were shooting - he eagerly worked long days, so this has all come as a nasty shock."
The film also stars 30 Rock star Katrina Bowden, LeeLee Sobieski and Chris Kattan.
Linda revealed the film was shot at a high school in Queens and none of the cast were given trailers, adding: "Instead, everyone, including Dennis, got a classroom. He never once complained. He is a brilliant, brilliant man. The younger cast members absolutely worshipped him."
