The Australian director's last film was Western Lawless starring Tom Hardy, Guy Pearce, Shia LaBeouf and Jessica Chastain, while before that he worked on timeless post-apocalypse film The Road with Viggo Mortensen.

John said: "I'm hoping to do two things next. One is a crime thriller, Triple Nine, but contemporary. I'm very keen to do something contemporary. That's what I hoped, it's financed and getting cast as we speak. It's very ambitious and ensembles are always tricky, so we will see.

"The other one, right now is like the renaissance of television; we look back at this decade of cable TV in America. We look at American films in the 70s with HBO and all their other series."

The 51-year-old filmmaker also revealed that after almost breaking his neck in a car crash in the Australian outback on the set of his 2005 film The Proposition, his priorities had changed.

He said: "It certainly made me re-think things definitely, and also particularly my relation to my wife and family, those closest to you. Moments like that actually give you a better focus of what is really important.

"There were a lot of miraculous things that happened. Four hours not seeing a single person in the desert, and the crash happened just within sight of a cattle station that happened to have a medic there... who happened to get in the flying doctors... who happened to get me into the hospital. I was extremely lucky not to have broken my neck. "

:: Lawless is released on Blu-ray and DVD on 14 January by Momentum Pictures.
