Harrison Ford has spoken out about being a dad to nine-year-old Liam - Calista Flockhart's adopted son - describing it as "unexpected".

The Indiana Jones star, who is engaged to the Ally McBeal actress, told Parade.com: "I wasn't expecting it at all - the unexpected part was certainly true and the joy part is also true."

"I think Liam was about six or eight months old when I met him and Calista, and we have been together ever since," he added.

Harrison, who next stars in Extraordinary Measures with Brendan Fraser, says he makes time for his family.

"On the weekends, I do whatever Calista and Liam want to do," he admitted.

"We'll take a couple of hours on Sunday morning to go motorcycle riding or go for a hike. I just made a birdhouse with my son."

The 67-year-old already has four children from his previous two marriages, and is grandfather to two as well.

"My children have taught me a lot about parenting," he said.

"My first child was born when I was 25. Babies raising babies is not a pretty sight. I am much better at it now."
