Tom Hanks and director Ron Howard are set to reunite for Inferno, based on Dan Brown's best-selling novel.
The duo, who previously worked together on The Da Vinci Code and Angels And Demons, will take on the thriller, reported Deadline.
They had previously been expected to team up again for the author's third book The Lost Symbol, until production on that film stalled.
Tom, 57, will once again portray Professor Robert Langdon as he attempts to solve the mystery of Inferno, the first part of Dante Alighieri's 14th century poem, Divine Comedy.
David Koepp will return to write the third instalment.
Inferno has already been scheduled for a release date of December 2015.
Tom, who was last seen in Cloud Atlas, will next portray kidnapped Captain Phillips in Paul Greengrass' biopic and will star in Disney biopic Saving Mr Banks, where he will play filmmaker Walt Disney.
