Jackie Earle Haley has dismissed rumours he auditioned for Johnny Depp's part in the original Nightmare On Elm Street.

Jackie, who has taken over from Robert Englund as villain Freddy Krueger in the remake, said: "It's a rumour that I auditioned for Nightmare."

He added: "It is possible that I auditioned for Nightmare On Elm Street and I don't remember. It's also possible I could have been sat next to Johnny Depp in the waiting room, that's the only thing I can figure."

The actor also described how hard it was to be made up like Freddy.

He said: "It's like the most cumbersome, arduous stuff I've ever dealt with. You sit in that chair for three hours and they are painstakingly gluing this thing down, it's a slow process.

"It's all the way up to my eyelids and on my eyeballs. The poking, the prodding. I remember sitting there and thinking, 'it's gotta be better going to the dentist' and since then I've been to the dentist and I was right, it's a lot easier going to the dentist and that's not right."

:: Nightmare On Elm Street is out in cinemas on May 7.
