Ryan Gosling could star as Busby Berkeley in a biopic about the director and choreographer of musicals from Hollywood's golden age, according to reports.

The Hollywood Reporter said that Ryan could also direct and co-produce the film for Warner Bros.

The Crazy, Stupid, Love star would take on producing duties with Marc Platt, who he previously worked with on indie crime movie Drive.

Choreographer and film director Busby was famous for his elaborate dance routines in Hollywood musicals of the 1930s like 42nd Street and Gold Diggers.

He was famous for his overhead shots in which chorus girls began shifting in kaleidoscopic patterns and turned to directing on films such as She Had To Say Yes and the movie version of Gold Diggers.

Warner Bros has optioned the book Buzz: The Life And Art Of Busby Berkeley by Jeffrey Spivak but the project is said to be in early stages, with no writer yet attached to the film.

Hollywood heartthrob Ryan's directorial debut How To Catch A Monster, which he also wrote, is due out later this year.
