Sir Elton John and David Furnish have called their 3D animation Gnomeo And Juliet a "labour of love" they hoped to one day share with son Zachary.

The film, a love story about garden gnomes based on Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, has been in production for 11 years and has premiered in London's Leicester Square, which was transformed into a giant garden for the event.

David, who executive-produced the project with partner Elton, said: "We'd love to make more kids' films. This has been really wonderful. We're very excited that in four or five years' time Zachary will be able to see this film."

Both men were proud to see the project finally completed as they walked the astro-turf carpet decorated with giant flowers, garden ornaments and red and blue gnomes.

Elton said: "It's taken 11 years because Disney weren't enthusiastic about gnomes at one point and we persuaded them to stay with it.

"Several times it's been resuscitated from the death bed and when you love something - Lion King took 10 years and Toy Story was rejected initially - we believed in it and we stuck with it, and we're really happy with the results."

While the production might have taken several years to get off the ground, persuading people to voice the characters was easy. Elton revealed: "I rang up Michael Caine and he was very generous, I asked Ozzy Osbourne. We didn't have any problem casting, people seem to want to do these kind of things."

The Rocket Man's songs feature on the soundtrack, along with some original tracks he wrote for the film, and a duet with Lady Gaga.
