Brendan Gleeson has said acting opposite his son Domhnall in new film Calvary felt like boxing with a friend.
Brendan stars as a small-town Irish priest in the dark film, written and directed by John Michael McDonagh, who he worked with on The Guard.
Though he and About Time star Domhnall both appeared in Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows, it is the first time Brendan has shared scenes with his eldest son.
Brendan told the Radio Times: "It's like two boxers who are friends. If you're boxing each other, the other part of you stays outside the ring."
The pair didn't speak to each other for 24 hours and Domnhall, 30, admitted shooting the scene was "tough".
He said: "It was the first time I'd acted with Dad and felt I could do more than just learn.
"Now I felt equipped to throw a punch back."
Domnhall admits he still learns from his father
He said: "I take advice from Dad all the time. You'd have to be stupid not to use a source of information like him."
But Brendan views him as an equal.
He said: "When I talk to Domhnall about acting now, it's past the stage of me imparting nuggets of wisdom. I'm interested in what he's doing for myself."
