George Clooney’s mother: ‘We couldn’t be happier’ about our son’s engagement to Amal

George Clooney’s mother Nina has given her blessing to her son’s engagement.
The Hollywood star's mother Nina said she “couldn’t be happier” as news emerged the Hollywood actor had popped the question to human rights lawyer Amal Alamuddin.
"We weren't at all surprised when they told us they were engaged, and we couldn't be happier for them.
"On an intellectual level, they are equals. That is very important to him. Amal's world couldn't be more different from the Hollywood lifestyle. She's a lawyer, she is brilliant, she is a very bright woman and at the very top of her career."
She added : "They also share a sense of fun, a sense of humour and they are both very caring people,” she said.
Meanwhle, colleagues have praised the "utterly wonderful" human rights lawyer Amal and offered their congratulations.
The Oxford-educated barrister, who has represented WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, has been described as a "passionate defender of human rights".
Gravity star Clooney is said to have popped the question and she is reported to have been seen wearing a large ring as she accompanied him to a dinner with Cindy Crawford and Edward Norton at a California restaurant.
Beirut-born Alamuddin, 36, is a member of Doughty Street Chambers in London, having joined in 2010 to complete her pupillage.
Eminent lawyer Geoffrey Robertson, who is the joint head of chambers, said: "Amal Alamuddin is a brilliant and passionate defender of human rights who has put in the enormously hard work necessary to improving them. She is respected and admired by all her colleagues."
Chief executive Robin Jackson said: "Amal has been utterly wonderful since she arrived in Chambers. She brings a bright light to everything she is involved in, and I am so delighted at her happy news."
Fluent French and Arabic speaker Alamuddin is said to have spent time with 52-year-old Clooney in New York, Tanzania and the Seychelles. The actor was previously married to actress Talia Balsam and has said that he would never marry again, although he has dated a string of beautiful women including Lisa Snowdon, Stacy Keibler and Elisabetta Canalis.
As recently as 2012 his sister Adelia Zeidler said: "George will probably not get married. He decided that he could have the career or he could have a family."
Alamuddin is part of the international law team at her chambers and in the past few years she has advised Kofi Annan - the joint special envoy of the United Nations and the Arab League - on the situation in Syria.
She also represented Assange during extradition proceedings and acted as counsel to the UN inquiry on the use of drones in counter-terrorism operations.
