Gary Oldman says he has felt a "little typecast" in the past.
The 53-year-old actor made his breakthrough playing Sex Pistols' wild rocker Sid Vicious in Sid And Nancy, and went on to play charismatic villains in films such as Francis Ford Coppola's Dracula, Leon and The Fifth Element. He revealed he felt those roles had earned him a certain reputation.
Gary said: "I don't know why, but a career is like a train that you get on and it takes you where it takes you and people see something in you and they cast you and you do get a little typecast.
"And I've played my fair share of characters that emotionally express themselves in a physical way."
So the British actor and director revealed playing the reserved and thoughtful George Smiley in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy was a welcome break.
Gary said: "It was an easy fit. It was great to sit down!"
