Game of Thrones hailed a record-breaker

Game of Thrones has made the Guinness Book of Records for the largest TV drama simulcast.

This comes after episode two of season five was broadcast in 173 countries simultaneously.

Actress Maisie Williams, who plays Arya Stark in the show, picked up the award on behalf of the show.

"So pleased for Game of Thrones to be a part of Guinness World Records, I'm not going to tell my step brother as he gets the book every year for Christmas," she said. "I can't wait to see the look on his face!"

Singers Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift, Modern Family's Sofia Vergara and boyband One Direction have also secured records.

Sheeran's accolade is the "longest time to reach number one" on the UK singles charts. His single Thinking Out Loud took 19 weeks to top the charts.

His close friend and music star Swift has been awarded the title for most million selling weeks on the US albums charts.

Boy band One Direction, who have announced they are taking a temporary break to pursue solo projects, have a whopping six records in the 2016 book.

Among the records they hold are: most followers on Twitter for a music group, most popular dance game track and most YouTube subscribers for a band.

Actress Vergara is enjoying success as the highest earning actress in a current TV series for the third year in a row.

According to the Guinness World Records she earned £21.7m in 2014, which is higher than her reported figure of £19.1m in 2013.

Other achievements from the world of showbiz featured in the book include:

:: Highest annual earnings for a model: Gisele Bundchen (£30.2 million in 2014)

:: Highest grossing IMAX film & largest IMAX opening: Interstellar (£452.5 million in 760 IMAX cinemas worldwide)

:: Most bankable Hollywood actor: Brad Pitt

:: Slowest film production (script to screen) - drama: Boyhood (2014) - 12 years

:: Most "liked" person on Facebook: Shakira (107,142,986 likes)

:: Highest annual earnings ever for a music artist: Dr Dre - £398 million in pre-tax earnings

Editor-in-chief of the Guinness World Records, Craig Glenday, said: " The entertainment industry often provides the most fast-paced changes at the cutting edge of record-breaking - whether it is digital music downloads, YouTube hits, IMAX releases or social media followings.
