The US actor - who played the character in the original trilogy - will be in the eagerly anticipated Episode 7, reports the Latino Review.

The site claims that Harrison is confirmed for the movie, which is being directed by JJ Abrams, although it is not known whether he will be making a cameo or playing a larger part.

Last year it was reported that the 70-year-old was open to reprising his role.

Soon after it was announced that three new Stars Wars movies were in the pipeline after creator George Lucas sold his company to Disney in a £2.5 billion deal, the rumour mill started buzzing with speculation about whether the original stars would take part.

An insider told Entertainment Weekly's Inside Movies blog: "Harrison is open to the idea of doing the movie and he's upbeat about it, all three of them are."

This refers to Harrison, Mark Hamill, who played Luke Skywalker, and Carrie Fisher, who played Princess Leia, who all shot to fame after starring in the original Star Wars film in 1977.

Carrie later confirmed she wanted to be in the film.

Asked by TMZ.com if she would accept a role, the 66-year-old said: "Yes. Sure. Wouldn't you?"
