The X-Men star is said to be getting behind the wheel for the movie, which he would also produce through his company DMC Film, reported The Tracking Board.

While the plot for the film is being kept under wraps, it is tipped to centre on the early days of Formula One racing because Enzo Ferrari, whose cars ruled the sport in its infancy, coined the term "garagista" to refer to younger independent teams, mostly from Britain. These "garage teams" rose to prominence in the late 50s and early 60s.

Michael, who recently reprised his role as the young Erik Lehnsherr/Magneto in X-Men: Days Of Future Past, is a self-confessed fan of the sport.

The 37-year-old, who has taken part in Top Gear's reasonably priced car competition, narrated the 2013 Formula One documentary 1: Life On The Limit, and said his dream was to be a racing driver.

"In my fantasy world I'd be a Formula One driver in the early 80s. That would be pretty cool," he told Esquire.

Formula One fever seems to be attracting the attention of filmmakers, following Ron Howard's Rush, which chronicled the rivalry of famous drivers James Hunt and Niki Lauda, and documentaries like Senna and Truth In 24.

Michael's upcoming big-screen outings include an as-yet-untitled Terrence Malick film alongside Ryan Gosling, Christian Bale and Natalie Portman, and playing Macbeth in Justin Kurzel's adaptation of William Shakespeare's play.

He will reprise his role as android David in the Prometheus sequel, is developing an Assassin's Creed film and is in talks to join Alicia Vikander in Derek Cianfrance's drama, The Light Between Oceans.
