HOLLYWOOD heart-throb Jason Segel took on the real-life role of matchmaker last night when he helped orchestrate the surprise engagement of a Dublin couple at the Irish premiere of 'Five Year Engagement'.

Beaming on the petal-strewn hot pink-red carpet at Dublin's Savoy Cinema, the star and co-writer of the "anti-romantic comedy" said he was delighted.

"It was really exciting and it was oddly very sweet," he said when Swords native Stephen Lawlor (38) bent down on one knee on the cinema stage and in front of the 500-strong audience proposed to his girlfriend Erin Evans (35), also from Swords, Dublin.

"I've got to tell you, I was a bit sceptical of the public proposal but it was perfect, it couldn't have been better," Mr Segel said.

It was smiles all round for the happy couple, who have been dating for the past three years.

Minutes before the film started to roll, he told his sweetheart: "I love you very, very much and I can't wait to spend the rest of my life with you. Will you marry me?"

Ms Evans, who said yes, said she was in shock.

The film opens across Ireland on Friday, June 22.
