Ellen Page cast in gay rights drama
Ellen Page is to play a lesbian in a film inspired by the true story of a gay couple's fight for their rights.
The Juno star will play New Jersey car mechanic Stacie Andree, who battled along with her police detective girlfriend Laurel Hester, to try and secure Laurel's pension benefits after the policewoman was diagnosed with a terminal illness, Variety reports.
As they were in a lesbian relationship and not married in the eyes of the law, Stacie was not entitled to a widow's pension after her girlfriend's death.
Ron Nyswaner - Oscar-nominated for Philadelphia, which starred Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington - is writing the screenplay based on Cynthia Wade's award-winning documentary, Freeheld. Wade's film won the Oscar for best short documentary in 2008.
Producer James D Sterm of production company Endgame said: "As a documentation and feature producer, you always look for powerful stories with subject matter that will resonate with audiences, and Cynthia's remarkable chronicle of the battle forged by two women did just that."
Ellen, 23, will next be seen opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in Christopher Nolan's Inception.
