Elba: Pacific set like film school

Idris Elba said he's learned a lot working on Pacific Rim

Idris Elba has revealed he has been learning a lot watching director Guillermo del Toro at work on new sci-fi epic Pacific Rim, and wants to get behind the camera himself.

The Luther actor stars in the Pan's Labyrinth director's new film, set in a future where soldiers pilot giant robots into battle against invading giant monsters.

Idris revealed: "Working with Guillermo was just like a film school, he's amazing and has such a massive imagination.

"When you see the film, you'll understand that all of this scale came from this man's head and it was great to watch him and hone me as an actor. It's really interesting to watch how he does that because he has it in his head and then portrays it to the actors. It was a good feeling. It was hard work, it's a monster movie, no pun intended."

The Wire star has already tried his hand at DJing and recording, and is in talks to make a film version of hit drama Luther, which he also co-produces.

But Idris insisted he won't forget his television roots.

He said: "I am very proud of the real estate I have in TV and not to turn bragadocious, but there are two shows that I'm proud of that have made cult status and sometimes there aren't films that have made cult status so it's nice to know that within that space you can make really, really good TV.

"So I have a vision of my being on TV for the rest of my life, but I want to step into film a little bit more. Directing and producing is definitely on my agenda."
