Downey Jr: Stark is vulnerable

Robert Downey Jr and his wife Susan Downey arrive at the world premiere of Marvel's Iron Man 3

Robert Downey Jr says he thinks more women than men love his Iron Man character because he's got a soft side.

The Hollywood star hit the red carpet, with his wife Susan, in Los Angeles for the premiere of the third instalment of the franchise and he said he could understand Tony Stark's attraction.

"He's made vulnerable by this injury he has and he's innovative enough to know that if he wants to be the guy he used to be, he has to think his way out of it."

The actor said he was always overcome by the outpouring of support from fans.

"I've literally been around the world and I am overwhelmed by the enthusiasm in Korea, China, Russia, Germany, France and England but it's great to come home and see my people."

Iron Man has a new nemesis in The Mandarin in the latest movie and British star Sir Ben Kingsley said the part was a joy to play.

"You can only enjoy a role as much as your director, cast and crew allow you and I was the new boy Brit but the welcome they give you when they open up the door is amazing. You feel trusted, they up your confidence and your nerves disappear.

"It makes you want to take risks and jump higher and be crazy, it's a very demanding role and I love it to bits."
