Douglas teary over film at Cannes

Michael Douglas said Behind The Candelabra was a beautiful gift

Michael Douglas choked back tears as he declared his role in Liberace biopic Behind The Candelabra "a beautiful gift" following his battle with cancer.

The 68-year-old actor - who stars as the flamboyant entertainer Liberace alongside Matt Damon in Steven Soderbergh's film - was diagnosed with life-threatening throat cancer in 2010, and was later cleared in 2011.

Michael told a press conference at the Cannes Film Festival: "For me this has..." He was overcome with emotion and apologised as he pulled himself together. He went on: "Because it was right after my cancer, and this beautiful gift was handed to me and I'm eternally grateful to Steven and Matt and Jerry [producer Jerry Weintraub] and everybody for waiting for me."

Michael walked the red carpet at the film's premiere later that evening with Steven and Matt, who plays his screen lover Scott Thorson in the movie.

He joked at the press conference: "In terms of being in bed with Michael Douglas I now have things in common with Sharon Stone, and that's really great... Glenn Close we can all go out and trade stories!"
