Director: I nearly kissed Gere

Richard Gere acted out a scene with director Nicholas Jarecki in a top restaurant

Arbitrage director Nicholas Jarecki has revealed he almost kissed Richard Gere in a bid to get him to star in the movie.

The Pretty Woman actor plays a corrupt hedge fund manager trying to save his family life in the thriller co-starring Susan Sarandon and Tim Roth, which is 33-year-old Nicholas' debut feature film.

Nicholas revealed how he met Richard for lunch in a Michelin-starred restaurant to discuss his screen play and persuade him to sign up to the role.

He said: "We started deciding we're going to rehearse a little bit.

"I decide I'm going to play the French mistress and he'll play himself and we go right into a dramatic scene.

"I'm yelling at him: 'You're stringing me along, you're never leaving your wife, you don't care, I'm leaving!' and he says 'Come here!' and he grabs my arm and there's 50 diners there but he throws me up against the wall of the restaurant and I stare deeply into his eyes, and I see that seductive Richard Gere look.

"And I looked him deep in the eye and said 'I would kiss you right now!' And he looked at me like I was insane.

"And then we laughed and he said 'I like what we're doing here, let's keep going.' But another meeting or two - no more physical contact, but we had it, and we made our film."
