Film fans have been taking photos of themselves after they watch the big-screen adaptation of John Green's novel, which stars Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort as cancer sufferers Hazel Lancaster and Augustus 'Gus' Waters. They then share the pictures on social networking websites such as Instagram and Twitter.

Laura, who plays Hazel's mother Frannie, said: "In America now, people are Instagramming photos of themselves coming out of The Fault In Our Stars. It's hysterical.

"There's this one girl and her Instagram has gone viral. Her eyes are so puffy, mascara is running down (her face) and it says, 'Me after The Fault In Our Stars'. It's so funny, these selfies."

The Fault In Our Stars has been a box office hit in the US, and been praised by critics.

Laura admitted she isn't surprised by its success, saying: "I knew it was something special because I had the privilege of reading the book. John Green is such a gift to the world and I don't say that lightly.

"But I really didn't know how beloved it was when we were making it and learned rather quickly about how passionate the fans were, especially around the release of the film. Just being a lover of the book, we've all felt the same way that we want to fiercely protect John Green and his words, so you feel bonded to all the fans because you become one."

The 47-year-old actress added: "It's really reminded me of the privilege I should feel for each day."
