Johnny Depp's animated chameleon sheriff Rango has topped the international box office this past weekend with an impressive 22 million dollars in 38 territories.
After being in second place the previous weekend behind Oscar-winner The King's Speech, the animated family film moved into first and has 120.4 million dollars in global box office revenue to date. Animated movies have gained broad acceptance overseas, with Gnomeo And Juliet and Tangled also finding favour with kids and families on a global scale.
The devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan, the world's second-largest movie market behind North America, resulted in more than a 40 per cent drop in box office revenues from the region, according to global media measurement company Rentrak Corp. Long-term impact of the quake on the international marketplace could also be significant.
The King's Speech took second place in the global list, raking in just over 14 million dollars at the weekend, with a total of 338.3 million during its 16 weeks of release.
Aaron Eckhart's Battle: Los Angeles, was third with 13.8 million dollars.
