Johnny Depp has revealed he would like to tread the boards playing Shakespearian anti-hero Hamlet.
The Hollywood superstar has turned his hand to various characters including swashbuckling pirate Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates Of The Caribbean films, the Mad Hatter in Alice In Wonderland and singing serial killer Sweeney Todd, the demon barber of Fleet Street, but confesses to a certain thespian longing.
"Hamlet is one of those actor cliche things that bounces around in your head," he told the Independent.
"Many years ago, Marlon Brando planted that seed in my skull and said, 'Kid, you really should play Hamlet before you get too long in the tooth'. He never got to play it, and so he kept hammering me to just take off, forget movies and go do it. And so I've thought about it more and more lately."
Johnny - who next stars in The Tourist with Angelina Jolie - fancies keeping his stage appearance on the down-low.
"The thing is I'd like to do with Hamlet is to do it as under the radar as possible, in a very tiny theatre, and if it caught on, then you could just move it somewhere else, to a rec [recreational] hall somewhere," he added.
