The American Gangster star reunites with Pelham 123 director Tony Scott for the film, which is based on the true story of a runaway unmanned train carrying hazardous chemicals in Ohio in 2001.
"It was the craziest, most frightening, exciting thing I've done on film, I think, in my life," the actor said at the at the movie's Los Angeles premiere.
"I can't believe what I actually did in this," the actor joked. "I can't believe [Tony] talked me into it and I can't believe I did it!"
He revealed: "You will see me running on top of a train going 50mph and it's me and helicopters flying around. It was crazy but it pays off - it's an intense film."
The 55-year-old confessed to having a few second thoughts whilst in the midst of all the action.
"I was standing up on top of this train and we're about to pull out and we know we're going to go 40 or 50 mph and I'm supposed to run across the top," he said. "I'm going 'they haven't paid me enough and even if they did I may not to be able to ever spend it.'"
