Guillermo del Toro is working on a stage musical version of Pan's Labyrinth

Pan's Labyrinth is headed for the stage.

Guillermo del Toro, who directed the 2006 fantasy film, has been working on a book for the show with writer and director Jeremy Ungar, while Oscar-winning Brokeback Mountain composer Gustavo Santaolalla is penning the music, Deadline reported.

Set in 1940s Spain, the film is about an army officer's stepdaughter who escapes into a strange and magical world. It picked up three Academy Awards and three Baftas after its release.

Del Toro has apparently been working on a stage version of Pan's Labyrinth for the past four years and will also co-produce.

Acclaimed songwriter Paul Williams has just been signed up to write the lyrics.

Del Toro - who earlier this week revealed he will direct ghost story Crimson Peak - said: "I admire and love Gustavo and Paul wrote the perfect album in Phantom Of The Paradise, which I have loved for decades."
