Del Toro directing Trollhunters
Guillermo del Toro is to write and direct Trollhunters, an animated horror movie aimed at children, it has been announced.
The Pan's Labyrinth director - who pulled out of The Hobbit earlier this year due to delays in its production - has been unveiled as developing several projects at DreamWorks Animation, The Hollywood Reporter revealed - and Trollhunters is one of them.
The film is based on a young adult novel that del Toro submitted to publisher Hyperion about two weeks ago.
Del Toro: said: "I wanted very much to develop a story that could be written for kids but dealt with a genre that was scary.
"It essentially combines fairy tales with modern times and is about how difficult it is to be kid. Normally, kids are idealised in animated films. But the growing pains, married with the notion that there is a world right next to us that is completely plagued by creatures of ancient lore, it's thematically fitting with the rest of my stuff."
The filmmaker has also been working as an executive producer and creative consultant on upcoming films including Kung Fu Panda 2, Puss In Boots, and Megamind.
As well as Trollhunters, del Toro is devloping a 3D adaptation of HP Lovecraft's At The Mountains Of Madness, with James Cameron producing. He is also producing The Haunted Mansion, based on the Disney ride, and the drama Midnight Delivery.
The Mexican director plans to finish writing Trollhunters before he begins shooting At The Mountains Of Madness in May.
