The third and final instalment of Nolan's rebooted Batman franchise, starring Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway, Tom Hardy and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, joins Silver Linings Playbook, Zero Dark Thirty and Les Miserables on the list.

Ben Affleck's political drama Argo, Quentin Tarantino's western Django Unchained, Steven Spielberg's Lincoln and Ang Lee's Life Of Pi also make the top 10, along with Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom and Benh Zeitlin's directorial debut Beasts Of The Southern Wild.

The annual list, chosen by scholars and industry insiders, is seen as an indicator for the Oscars' best picture category.

The AFI has also released its top 10 TV programmes of 2012, which includes political thriller Homeland, zombie drama The Walking Dead and period show Mad Men.

Other shows include Girls, Game Of Thrones, Modern Family and American Horror Story.
