The Hobbit actor has joined movie industry figures to pick five nominees for the prize, which honours up-and-coming film talent.

Previous recipients include The Dark Knight Rises star Tom Hardy, Twilight's Kristen Stewart, and The Last King Of Scotland's James McAvoy

Benedict said of the gong, officially named the EE Rising Star Award: "Judging by the quality of previous nominees and winners it's often the beginning of an exciting step-up of profile and opportunity."

He added: "It's a great platform for young actors and actresses to shine and I'm thrilled to be on board."

The classically trained star - whose breakthrough film role was in the 2006 William Wilberforce biopic Amazing Grace - said young actors who want to break into the business should "keep being inquisitive and hard-working".

He added: "Don't lose your sense of humour, perspective or hope. What will be will be."

The award is the only accolade at the Baftas to be voted for by the public. Nominees will be announced on January 7 at Bafta's London headquarters and the winner will be announced at the EE British Academy Film Awards on February 10.

Other members of the jury include Scottish director Kevin Macdonald and film critic Mark Kermode.
