Benedict Cumberbatch wants to clear up stories that he is merely lending his voice to his forthcoming role in The Hobbit.

The Sherlock star, who is set to play Smaug the dragon and the Necromancer in Peter Jackson's Lord Of The Rings prequel, wants people to know that he will actually be playing the character through motion capture.

"I'm in it and I'm playing a dragon and I'm also playing the Necromancer. And I'm not - repeat not - doing the voiceover," he said on the War Horse red carpet.

The 35-year-old actor added: "I am playing him (Smaug). I am the voice but I am playing the moving, physical dragon. It's very exciting."

Benedict - who plays Major Stewart in Steven Spielberg's First World War epic War Horse - previously admitted he had started getting fit to prepare for the role.

"I've already started working out and doing various movement exercises to get myself limber for that all-important jump suit with balls on it, otherwise known as motion-capture," he told Collider.

"It'll be a physical role which I'm no stranger to. I did Frankenstein at the beginning of the year with Danny Boyle at the National Theatre and playing the creature in that was a very full on and sort of corporeal experience."

:: War Horse opens in cinemas on January 13.
