At a producers' conference Jerry revealed his fledgling plans to get Tom back in the skies, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
He said: "As long as he (Tom Cruise) keeps his enthusiasm, hopefully we can get it made."
Top Gun, released in 1986, is still one of Tom's most recognised films and saw him as a flight school pilot intent on beating his rivals and winning over his love interest.
He said: "If the audience likes the movie, hopefully The Lone Ranger will continue as a sequel."
The filmmaker revealed shooting The Lone Ranger had involved four to six horses playing one part, and building two trains and five miles of track arranged in a loop so that filming wouldn't need to stop.
The Lone Ranger is due to be released in cinemas on August 9.
