The 50-year-old actor will be presented with the chairman's award at the festival in January.

Festival chairman Harold Matzner said the Ides Of March star is "a consummate actor, director, producer and screenwriter (who has) demonstrated that no discipline within the film industry is beyond his reach".

He said George is being honoured for his performance in new film The Descendants, and for writing, producing, directing and starring in The Ides of March, which opened last month.

Past recipients of the chairman's award include Ben Affleck, Dustin Hoffman and Nicole Kidman.

George has also won an Academy Award and two Golden Globes.
