The Oscar-winning star co-wrote the script and had planned to direct the film but, when he realised his upcoming movie The Ides Of March would take up most of his time, he decided to hand the project over.

"Ben called me up, and said, 'I'm interested in directing it'. So I said, 'that's great'. Ben's a really, really good director, so I thought that was a great thing," he told the Playlist.

Set in 1979 and based on a true story, Argo follows a team of agents who pretend to be filmmakers in order to rescue a group of US hostages in Iran.

"I'd like to see Ben's take on it. Because while it's a thriller, it's got comedy in it, too, which is going to be fun for him. He's got a great sense of humour," George added.

The 50-year-old, who will premiere The Ides Of March and The Descendants at the BFI London Film Festival, is set to play author Douglas Preston in The Monster Of Florence, based on the writer's true-crime book about an Italian serial killer.

But he insisted he will not getting into the director's chair for that: "When you're directing, you're really doing everything - you're really busy!"
