Christian Bale is tipped to play literary character Travis McGee on the big screen.
The Batman star is in talks to take the role in The Deep Blue Good-by, a film version of writer John D MacDonald's book.
Variety reported that Christian has agreed to star in the movie, with an official offer expected soon.
The part was previously earmarked for Leonardo DiCaprio, but earlier this year it emerged that he had decided not to star in the film, although he is staying on as a producer.
There are 21 McGee novels, with 1964's The Deep Blue Good-by being the first. They follow beach bum Travis, who lives aboard his boat The Busted Flush and recovers property for clients, getting into misadventures and rescuing damsels in distress along the way.
The movie will be directed by Wolverine's James Mangold, who previously worked with Welsh star Christian on 3:10 To Yuma.
